What is 1KB4K?

This program encourages parents and caregivers to provide positive, nurturing early experiences by reading aloud to their children regularly.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood. The brain develops more rapidly during the first three years of a child’s life than at any other time during the lifespan.

Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most important, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

How It Works
Any child who has not yet entered kindergarten can sign up for the program. Participants will get a special library card specifically for the 1KB4K program to help keep track of the books they've read.

All books are eligible as long as the child hears them, and may be repeated as many times as you (and they!) would like.

Once the reading goal is met, stop by the library for a prize and special certificate of completion. Children who complete the program before the age of 5 can also earn their official library card early, in recognition of their accomplishments!
