1000 books before kindergarten wall of fame

Help your child become WILD about reading!

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (1KB4K) is a program designed to help children ages 0-4 build strong reading skills – the foundation for scholastic success and life-long learning!

Frog 100 books

Gecko 200 books

Turtle 300 books

How it works:

The program focuses on the Five Early Literacy Practices recommended by the American Library Association: Sing, Talk, Play, Read, and Write. Children who are regularly exposed to language through these practices are more likely to have a positive attitude toward reading well beyond kindergarten. It also serves as a great opportunity to bond with your child through songs, stories, and activities.

In this challenge, you will help your child complete 1,000 literacy practices, or books, and they will earn stickers and brag tags along the way.

Child participating

Simply come to the Children’s Department to register your child for their own special library card. Begin tracking your child’s first 100 books with our Level 1 reading log. Then, continue reading until you’ve reached level 10.

Logs are available at the library, or you can download and print them. We also have the challenge available on Beanstack if you prefer to track digitally.

Completion Awards

Upon completion, make sure to visit the library! Your child will earn:

  • A book
  • Designated spot on the Wall of Fame with their name and picture
  • Certificate of Completion, and
  • A name plate placed in their favorite book that others will see whenever it’s checked out (your child will be the first!)

Ready to start but have more questions? Call the Children’s Department at (815) 725-4368.
